Week 11: We also wanted to give you an update on Darwin's personality to go along with the adorable pictures. Because, of course, in addition to being beautiful, she is brilliant and strong. She loves to smile and talk. She says complete sentences - that is she realizes that sentences are composed of words that each have a different sound, so she talks by stringing together different sounds. She also likes to sing.

One of her favorite games is to make Daddy touch her nose and say "bless you". He does this when she sneezes, but sometimes she will cough or make other noises trying to imitate a sneeze. She also plays the tongue game, and loves it when she gets us to stick out our tongue in imitation of her.

Her legs and stomach are very strong. She loves to hold our fingers and pull herself up to a sitting and then standing position. Her arms are less strong, and she doesn't much like laying on her belly.

She seems very healthy, though she spits up a lot! She is active and interactive when she is awake. She also sleeps a lot - from about midnight or 1 to 9 or 10, plus several naps throughout the day. She most likes to nap with mom sleeping with her, or second best is in the carrier. She also loves to go for walks, and of course to nurse as much as possible when she is awake.

Her favorite color is green. She is very attentive to green things. We went to a student art exhibit the other day, and she was most fascinated by the paintings that had lots of green, though she seemed to really enjoy the art in general. She also loves to be outside and to look at trees and at lights. She even helps us garden!

Week 16: Darwin has changed so much in the last couple of weeks. She is getting stronger every day, and has started new games and activities.

The biggest change has been that she is starting to manipulate objects other than just mom & dad's fingers. She is very curious and loves to explore. She now likes to play with rattles, glasses, the edge of the table, her new puzzle pieces, various stuffed animals (frogs, kitty, turtle, etc.), the quilt Grandma Melchiorre made, and anything else we give her.

She has also become better at showing affection, including patting our faces, holding our hands close to her (especially when nursing) and even offering kisses in addition to giving them back.

Her communication skills are also improving. She now clearly understands nurse, daddy, up, mommy, Darwin and seems to understand several other words. She is also learning how to sign "hungry", and has several other ways to let us know when she is hungry as well. The only confusing thing about it is that she has also started teething, and sometimes chewing on her fist can be confused with "hungry".

As you might expect if the thing she communicates best is "hungry", she is getting pretty chubby; a nursing mothers delight since it means she is getting enough milk. Since her parents are both science geeks, you can see a chart of her growth below

While she isn't crawling yet, she has gotten more mobile. She squirms and puts herself into desireable positions. She still loves to stand, preferably by herself by leaning against pillows. She is very musical, and loves being sung to sleep, and sometimes hums to herself when she nurses. She also likes playing percussion with her feet.

We are all totally in love with each other
