Broccoli Sandwich

This sandwich is strangely good.  Everyone I know who I've told about it has balked at the description.  Then when they've had one they love them!  You need to follow the recipe exactly, or you're on your own.  I think what makes this work is the exact combination of flavors.

I prefer the version with cheese, but the one without will work too.

With Cheese

Ingredients:

Sourdough Bread
Fresh Broccoli
Mayonnaise
Butter
Pepper
Cheddar Cheese

Preperation:

  1. Cut broccoli into approximately 1" by 1" or 1" by 2" chunks.  Use just the best parts of the broccoli (avoid the big stems).  Boil or steam broccoli until tender.  Drain all water from the broccoli and spread on paper towels.  Make sure the broccoli is as dry as possible, but still hot as possible from the boil/steaming.
  2. Toast bread, spread mayonnaise on one piece, butter on the other.
  3. Pepper the mayonnaise side.
  4. Place cooked broccoli on the mayonnaise side, covering the bread completely from edge to edge (should be a layer of broccoli about 1" thick).
  5. Cut cheddar cheese into 1/8th" to 1/4" strips.  Cover buttered bread with cheese.
  6. Combine broccoli and cheddar halves together into a cohesive sandwich.  Requires a small amount of manual dexterity.  If no manual dexterity is available, you can cover the cheese half with the cooked broccoli and then put the mayonnaise covered toast on top of that.

Serve with potato chips, particularly Pringles brand.

Without Cheese

Do all the same stuff as above, just omit the cheese
