I didn't keep any slaves, why am I paying?

My forefathers didn't keep any slaves either, what am I "apologizing" for?

Slavery ended almost 140 years ago.

All the slaves are dead.

Slavery was just a matter of life then.  

In Africa they still practice it, so in actuality if the slaves weren't brought here, their descendents in Africa might be slaves today, whereas here they're free.

Certainly life is better in the US.  I don't see anybody border jumping to get into Africa.
