Christian's Music Page

Okay, the intro to this page was verbose enough, but if you like to sample music check out Tunes.Com. This site has samples of everything, and everything is for sale. Now I still love visiting all my local music stores but this is how I compose my ever-growing shopping list.

What's on the Stereo

Blame it on the Tour de France, but it's French music that's been getting the airplay in our household.  Here's the selection:.

Dimitri from Paris, Sacre Blue Dance, found sounds, and Europop at it's finest.  This CD is pure fun, perfect for tour watching, cocktail parties, and other moments of Francophilia.

Valérie Lemercier, Chante I originally caught one song on KCRW and it instantly conjured up memories of Brigitte Bardot's recordings (which I've also been collecting).  After searches of great length trying to decipher the precise spelling and musical genre this might be found under , I found the CD at Fingerprints.  Now the quest begins to figure out just where she came from.  In the meantime more francopop ala Brigitte Bardot.

Serge Gainsbourg, Great Jewish Music This is really a collection of contemporary artists performing the music of Serge Gainsbourg.  A great collection featuring a versions of Je T'Amie by Cibo Matto, Contact by John Zorn and the ballad of Melody nelson by Fred Frith.

Jazz  a Saint Germain Lisa succumbed to my obsession and picked up this one, a collection of Cole Porter Tunes (always a pleasure) performed in French by such artists as the Jazz Passenger with Deborah Harry, Patricia Kaas, jane Birkin, and Iggy Pop.  How could you go wrong?

Pizzicato Five, Remix Album: Happy End of You Okay, so this one's Japanese and not French, this is still a fun album taking a collection of themes that could be straight from 60's American film strips and turning them into a pulsating hyper-nostalgic techno dance party--or so it seems to me anyway. A touch of diversity in my selection.

Recent Acquisitions

Air, Moon Safari Yet another French band, I just can't get enough I guess.  This one blends pop-electronica that creates that 1960's vision of the future--sort of nostalgic futurism.  Anyway, it of course had been getting lots of airplay on KCRW, so I had to pick it up.

Morcheeba, Big Calm  More electronic pop, this time with those wan-women vocals that I seem to love.

Massive Attack, Mezzanine More of the same, had to complete this pop electronic set, the easy listening of our time.

Garbage, Version 2.0  So perhaps Garbage is a retread of Curve (or so their fans tell me).  I originally fell for their piece in Romeo & Juliet and have been a convert ever since..

Pink Martini, Sympathetique The band's name is probably enough to get me to buy this CD, but after hearing a few tracks from this Portland bands repertory I couldn't pass it by.  They do fantastic versions of such classics as Qué Sera Sera, Brazil, and Bolero.
