Hawaii, 24 September to 2 October 2004
I went on a week-long vacation on the big island of Hawaii starting in September of 2004 with the Bicycle Adventures company (
http://www.bicycleadventures.com). The first morning started out with a briefing from Jill, the lead guide, departing from Waimea. We rode toward the coast with lunch at Honoka'a (forgive my spelling, if I don't get it right in this page--maybe someday I'll double-check and update if required). In the early afternoon, we stopped at the Waipio valley overlook (I, of course, wore my hawaiian print jersey!) Later that afternoon, we cycled the coast into Hilo; it was beautiful there! The next morning, we were in the Pahoa area, and I took this shot of hardened lava called
pahoehoe. While in that area, there was a group of girls who had setup a lemonade stand in their front yard (they also enjoyed having their picture taken!)The next day we were in Volcano Village, and while hiking around the Kilauea area, I stopped and got this photo of
Kilauea-iki crater. There were papaya groves in the Pahoa area, but I had forgotten to snap a picture. Fortunately, while visiting a coffee plantation in the Kona area,
I saw this one. Actually, this tree had fallen over, and this one branch grew into the dominant portion of the tree, but it served it's purpose (see how the fruit grows from the trunk, and not from a branch!)Last but not least, I saw
petroglyphs near the resort area of Waikoloa.Upon completion of the trip, they gave us this
certificate!
