Nuke Stuff:

Nukes.... can be a total pain. Unfortunately they are a fact of life when using the Internet . If you have ever been on the Internet and your screen froze, and you had to reboot, it could have been a nuke. Usually tcpip.sys will crash, computer will freeze, NT will give the blue screen of death with a core dump, it really depends on the operating system. (note as of August 17th, there are no known nukes or patches for Windows 98). There is no permanent damage, but it is pretty annoying. There are some solutions for Win95, Install the patches on your computer - follow the instructions on the links below.

Everyone should read the information on these web sites below about nukes. This can effect everyone while chatting on IRC or even just being logged on your ISP. There are words about the symptoms and if there is a fix for the type of nuke and also you can download patches to fix what can be fixed and also software and scripts that monitor your ports to see who is connected to you for a possible nuking. Windows 98 seems to handle nukes much better that Windows 95. Windows 95 will crash allot or get disconnected from ISP, but the only thing I have encountered in Windows 98 where I believe I was nuked, is an extreme system slow down where it seems like it may want to lock up and never does. All the info I have found on Win 98 says that there are no known problems or patches. I suggest everyone download NukeNabber to monitor your ports. It can shut the port down if a connect comes for a configurable amount of time. Read the NukeNabber FAQ sheet. Use the upgrade and patch wizard on the download site to see what you need to use nukenabber and protect yourself. I have added ports to monitor from the FAQ that are not default in nukenabber. Win95 users must upgrade to winsock 2.2 to use NukeNabber. Run the Winsock Version Checker program. Then use the Upgrade and Patch Wizard , it will tell you what to download. Win98 users should visit Windows Update often and I use the Critical Update Notification tool for the Task Scheduler that you can install from Windows Update. You can also download The Cleaner to check for Trojan horses on your pc.
