Bob's Auto Repair Tips

Most people really don't care about the workings of the automobile as long as the car keeps taking them where they want to go. This is OK as long as nothing goes wrong. The purpose of this document will be to educate the reader as to the value of having some basic knowledge of the workings of the automobile.

Basics

I think every driver should have a basic understanding of the vehicle they drive and be familiar with the rules of safe driving before tearing off on that trip to the Grand Canyon. By doing just a few simple checks before leaving on that trip you could save yourself a bunch of grief. Here are some bare bones items all drivers should know:

Owners Manual If you have one, READ IT! You won't regret it. Could save you from some serious problems.

Tires Look at your tires, see if there are any buldges or tread separation. Keep a tire air pressure gauge in your glove box. (inexpensive and available at any auto parts store). I know what you're thinking, "any idiot knows this". But did you know there are people out there that don't even know how to check their oil! Check the tire air pressure. Look on the side of the tire, it will show the maximum inflation pressure. NEVER EXCEED this, your life could be on the line! Air expands when heated, if you exceed the maximum pressure the tire could blow out causing loss of control! Under inflating the tire can cause premature wear and ultimate tire failure. Here is an interesting newspaper article I read on this subject.

Fluid Levels Yup! Need to check that oil and water. Don't know how? See your owners manual or ask Ed next door. If you have an automatic transmission....again, check the oil. Don't be afraid to ask Ed, he won't mind. Caution! Don't check the water level on a hot engine! Best time to check fluid levels is in the morning before you start the car. Check the automatic transmission fluid last. (You need to start the car to make this check). And don't forget the battery, power steering and brake fluid! Hey Ed..........!
