My interest in audio, and DIY audio in particular, goes way, way back to my first crystal radio receiver. After building the radio from a kit, I spent many nights listening to KEZY-AM in Los Angeles, drifting off to sleep in my bean bag chair with the little earphone plugged in.

Until one day, when the little earphone went on the fritz. I tried a "standard" earphone I had kicking around, and found it just wasn't sensitive enough for the "passive" crystal radio. So... I added a single-transistor amplifier to give it a little kick. I was hooked! I've been fascinated with the reproduction of sound ever since.

Presented on these pages are a few of the projects I've worked on over the years. May they present you with at least a pleasant diversion; it is my hope that they will also help inspire and perhaps instruct others bitten by the DIY audio bug.

Many thanks go to Eugene and Raymond DeWeiss, owners of the now-defunct ERD Speakers in Upland, CA for many hours of listening, discussion and much learning, and to the members of the Bass List for many more hours of discussion and help with some of these projects. Most of all, I'd like to thank my wife Kim for indulging me in this crazy hobby. And yes, she knew about it before we were married.
