Electronics Commercial DIY crossover details Satellites UPDATED Subwoofers |
After spending many hours discussing audio and absorbing experience from ERD, I set out to
build my first set of "real" speakers. Having witnessed several systems built as sub/satellites, I decided to do the same. Two subwoofers were built, with construction matching the satellites so that the pieces could be used together or separately. This flexibility has indeed come in handy over the years for improving room layout and increasing SAF. The satellites are 6 1/2" two-way designs, with a sealed enclosure. The subwoofers are 12" drivers in 3 cu. ft. vented boxes, aligned to a sixth-order Chebyshev alignment derived from Thiele's equations. The custom active crossover contains the auxilliary filter that matches with the box alignment. Cabinetry is MDF construction covered with veneers & solid woods. I had fallen in love with some tables at a local restaurant in Santa Barbara, which were built with a mahogany tabletop and oak trim. I decided that the light-dark contrast would make a nice looking box, and used that as the theme for the cabinets. I also used the "golden ratio" of 1.618:1 for most of the faces of the units. Details of each of the system components is available via the table of contents at the left or the photos at the right. |
