The Running Springs Stereo was concieved as a whole-house music system, with particular emphasis on good sound in the primary listening room. It was designed as the house was being constructed, so a good deal of cusomization was possible during construction. This was an exercise in complete system design, from component choices to system architecture to subwoofer design to installation and tuning. The entire project took about a year of part time work from start to finish. Ten years later, it still makes me stand back and say "Yeah." Review the construction of this system on these pages. Start with the System Architecture. |
The system architecture was conceived before a single component was purchased. Layouts for componentry, interconnections and wiring specs were completed and delivered to the architect for inclusion in the built up structure. Several areas of the system components required custom circuitry, including line-level amplification, electronic crossover, and remote volume control. Examine the layouts from the schematics page. Packaging of the electronics was masochistically over-miniaturized. Discover the pain of cramming after college from the electronics page. The subwoofer is the centerpiece of the system in many ways. Built into a 40 cubic foot enclosed attic space, it reaches 12 Hz at high levels. Finally, examine some photos of the completed system. |
