Getting older every day
Hello!
My name
is Glenn Hollis.
I live
in Apple Valley, California.
I have
a great wife named Deb`orah
and two kids that still live at home - Jessica age 15 and Kevin age
13. This is a link to my wife's home page. She has a lot of music (midi)
file's.
I'm a second degree Black Belt in the Shorin Ryu Style of Karate
I started studying Karate at the Shorin Ryu Academy of Karate in San Bernardino, California in 1966. Under Michael Gneck a 4th degree Black Belt (my first Sensei), his brother Tony Gneck a 6th degree Black Belt and George Torbett a 1st degree Black Belt (Sensei Torbett is now a 7th degree Black Belt and head instructor in San Bernardino, Ca.).
They all studied in Okinawa under Master Ezio Shimabukuro10th degree Red Belt and master of the Shobayashi Shorin Ryu Style. I was promoted to 1st degree Black Belt in 1968 at the age of 18 and soon after I opened the first karate school in the high desert (Victorville, Calif.). I was promoted to 2nd degree Black Belt in Dec. of 1974. Since then I have studied and watched many other styles and techniques and incorporated them into my style. After I was promoted to nidan ( 2nd Degree Black Belt ) I lost faith in promotions, as there was no real uniformity in the ranks. And a Black belt in one style would not qualify for a Green belt in an other.
The Martial Arts have become a way of life for me and have held me in good stead many times. And the mental discipline has helped me in my personal and professional life.
One of my class mates in San Bernardino was Bill (Super Foot) Wallace. He retired undefeated middleweight full contact karate champion of the world, and went on to teach in seminars all around the world. If you use the link to Bill's pic's you will see he is wearing the same patch that I use. It's from our old dojo in San Bernardino,Ca.
I now teach a few kids in the neighborhood for free when I have the time. And I still like to go to other schools in the area and talk to the sensei's from other styles.
Sensei Torbett officially retired from teaching on July 28th 2001. His retirement party was held at lucas Cortez's home in San Bernardino,Calif.
There were about 55 of his old students and there family's there to say good bye.
This is my son Kevin when he was a yellow belt --- age 7.
