In an effort to reduce the costs to the insurance company and shift them to you, the deductibles are going up and up and up. These days it is not unlikely that a mother must pay the first $500 in costs if her child needs medical attention. And believe me, it is not hard to run up bills like that for even a simple problem. On the one hand, this is a good thing because it allow the insurance company to stay in business. On the other hand, it can be a tremendous blow to the budget of a family who is struggling to meet their other expenses (including the premiums for the insurance). The
trend to higher deductibles will probably continue to shift the responsibility
for these costs to you. Even now, there are some who are not getting
