In an effort to reduce the costs to the insurance company and shift them to you, the deductibles are going up and up and up.  These days it is not unlikely that a mother must pay the first $500 in costs if her child needs medical attention.  And believe me, it is not hard to run up bills like that for even a simple problem.

On the one hand, this is a good thing because it allow the insurance company to stay in business.  On the other hand, it can be a tremendous blow to the budget of a family who is struggling to meet their other expenses (including the premiums for the insurance).
