How Cool-GaardTM saves you money and production time All coolants of good lubricity are oil based. The lubricity is needed for fast cutting, long tool life and good finishes. Bacteria very rapidly consumes oil when in water. Therefore the coolants use antibacterial agents to preserve the coolant. These are usually chlorine based. All of them dissipate, often lasting only a couple of weeks and sometimes less, usually through evaporation. The problem bacteria are anaerobic so the coolant will usually last as long as the coolant is well aerated. However, if it is left over a weekend or the machine is not used for a couple of days, the bacteria quickly consume much of the oil thereby diminishing the lubricating qualities of the coolant and producing a strong highly objectionable odor. The coolant has also become hazardous because the bacteria can produce a rash and other health problems when it comes in contact with the machine operator's skin. Aerating the degraded coolant will not restore the lubricating qualities because by this time a large portion of the oil has been consumed by the bacteria, sometimes reducing the coolant to the consistency of water. Adding new coolant at this stage is just a wasted expense because the new coolant is diluted by the old. Draining the problem coolant which is classified as a hazardous substance, disposing of it legally and replacing it is very costly and results in down time. Being caught dumping the waste coolant is much more expensive. Aircraft manufacturers will not allow chlorine to be used in the coolant when machining aluminum. This presents further problems of a bactericide that is effective. The active ingredient in Cool-GaardTM does not evaporate and continues to work as long as it is in the coolant. It is completely non corrosive, non-toxic and prevents infection in cuts and wounds and even promotes healing. It is even perfectly safe to drink. One small seldom used surface grinder still has the original coolant that was put in it four years ago! It has had oil on top of the water most of that time: the worst possible condition. It has had Cool-GaardTM added to it only once! The coolant is not fresh, but has not been attacked by bacteria and does not have an objectionable odor. The lubricity is still good. Admittedly, this is not typical, but greatly improved coolant life and performance is typical. By preventing the consumption of your coolant by bacteria, Cool-GaardTM saves large amounts of oil, down time, disposal costs and other machining problems, while improving production by maintaining lubricity. |
