This is an opening line of comedian Joan Rivers when she wants to “get serious” with a subject. Of course, she wants to make fun of some situation in life. Well, that's what we need to do with the subject of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). If this situation was not so serious, it truly would be comical. The FDA was formed back in the late 1930’s in response to the flood of “patent” medicines being sold to the public. Many of these had no medicinal value while some of them were even deadly. Dangerous substances such as cocaine, heroin and morphine were available without restriction. Interestingly, these same dangerous drugs are still available today. However, now you need a permission slip from a professional drug supplier (your doctor) so you can go to the local drug dealer (your pharmacy). Unless, of course, you have a “connection” which will provide whatever you want, just like the old days. Unfortunately, the FDA is failing miserably in controlling dangerous drugs and protecting the public. Dr. Mercola explains how the FDA is being influenced by big drug companies. Click here to view his short video. The goal of the FDA is to protect the public from dangerous substances which can do harm. In fact, a part of the process is to identify the unwanted side effects of a substance and keep the really dangerous substances out of the hands of the public. You be the judge.
